Aluminum easy-open ends are stamped from coil stock. Material selection depends on the end design, stamping operation, scoring requirements and required mechanical performance.

What Is Aluminum Sheet and Strip for Easy Open Ends?

Easy-open ends are produced from aluminum coil stock that is blanked, formed, scored and fitted with a tab. The aluminum must support several operations without creating unnecessary cracking, dimensional variation or surface defects. For this reason, EOE material selection is based on more than alloy alone.

Haomei supplies the aluminum sheet and strip in coil form so can-end manufacturers can match the material with their stamping equipment, end diameter, scoring design and tab configuration. Thickness, temper, strip width, flatness, edge quality and surface condition can all affect the forming process.

Alloy and Temper Selection for Aluminum Can End Stock

Choosing aluminum for easy-open ends (EOE) involves more than comparing alloy strength. The stock must form the shell and rivet, maintain a consistent score, and meet the finished end’s pressure and opening requirements. Both 5052 and 5182 are used in can-end applications, but the right choice depends on the end design, gauge, temper and production process.

5052 Aluminum Strip for Can Ends

5052 aluminum strip offers a balance of strength, corrosion resistance and formability for suitable can-end designs. Selection should account for the contents, service conditions and forming demands of the finished end—not just the alloy’s nominal mechanical properties.

Where 5052-H19 is specified, its high strain-hardening level provides strength with less forming margin than softer tempers. Shell forming, rivet integrity and score performance should be checked using the intended gauge and production tooling.

For more on the alloy’s properties and available supply forms, see our 5052 aluminum sheet guide.

5182 Aluminum for Beverage Can Ends and Pull Tabs

5182 is widely used for beverage can ends where strength and internal pressure resistance are key requirements. It is also used for pull tabs, although tab stock and end-shell stock may require different gauges, tempers and mechanical property limits.

Temper selection must balance finished-end strength with the formability needed for conversion. Coating and curing conditions also matter: material approval should reflect the properties and performance required after processing, not only those of the incoming strip.

If you would like to learn more about the material, see our 5182 aluminum alloy overview for alloy characteristics and available supply forms.

Why Choose 5052 and 5182 Aluminum for Easy Open Ends?

5052 Aluminum: Balanced Strength and Formability

5052 aluminum combines moderate strength with good formability, making it an option for selected food can ends and lower-pressure packaging. With a suitable temper and thickness, it accommodates the forming operations needed to produce the lid profile, flange, and integral rivet. It is worth considering where forming performance takes priority over maximum pressure resistance.

5182 Aluminum: Higher Strength for Pressurized Can Ends

5182 aluminum typically provides higher strength than 5052 and is widely used for beverage can ends, including beer and carbonated drink cans. That strength helps the end resist deformation under internal pressure and can support thinner-gauge designs, provided the finished end meets pressure, opening, and seaming requirements.

5052 and 5182 Aluminum Sheet and Strip Tolerances for Easy-Open Ends

Thickness tolerances for 5052 and 5182 aluminum

Thickness tolerance varies with the nominal gauge. For material over 0.220 mm and up to 0.300 mm thick, the permitted deviation is ±0.005 mm. For thicknesses over 0.300 mm and up to 0.500 mm, it is ±0.008 mm.

Nominal thickness (mm) Permitted deviation (mm)
>0.220 to ≤0.300 ±0.005
>0.300 to ≤0.500 ±0.008

Width Tolerances

Nominal width (mm) Listed deviation (mm)
≤1000.0 ±1.00
>1000.0 ±1.50
≤100.0 ±0.20
>100.0 +1.5

Length Tolerances

The listed positive length deviation is +10 mm for lengths up to 2000 mm and +20 mm for lengths over 2000 mm.

Nominal length (mm) Listed deviation (mm)
≤2000 +10
>2000 +20

Quality Inspection for Easy Open Ends Aluminum Sheet and Strip

Aluminum sheet and strip for easy-open ends must meet more than an alloy designation. Thickness variation, mechanical properties and surface defects can affect how the material feeds, forms and performs during end production. Haomei checks key material characteristics against the agreed specification to help maintain consistency from one coil to the next.

Alloy Chemical Composition

Chemical composition is checked against the limits for the specified aluminum alloy. Controlling alloying elements helps maintain the strength and forming characteristics required for easy-open-end applications.

Thickness and Strip Width

Sheet and strip thickness and width are inspected against the dimensional tolerances stated in the order. Consistent gauge supports stable forming and scoring conditions, while correct strip width helps maintain reliable feeding and alignment during stamping.

Tensile Strength, Yield Strength and Elongation

Mechanical properties can be verified against the requirements for the selected alloy and temper. Tensile strength, yield strength and elongation help assess whether the material offers the specified balance of strength and formability for conversion into easy-open-end components.

Surface, Flatness and Coil Condition

Pre-shipment inspection covers surface appearance, flatness, strip edges and coil condition. Checks focus on issues such as scratches, visible contamination, edge damage and uneven winding that could interfere with feeding, tooling contact or subsequent processing.

Haomei Aluminum EOE Stock: Coil Sizes and Supply Options

Haomei supplies aluminum stock for easy-open ends in master coils and slit coils—not finished can ends. Strip width can be specified to suit your stamping layout. Before ordering, confirm the required coil inner diameter, maximum outer diameter and coil weight against your uncoiling and handling equipment.

Each order should specify the alloy, temper, thickness, width and dimensional tolerances. If your production line requires slit material, include the target strip width and any edge-condition requirements so the supply details can be agreed before production.

Material certificates and inspection documents for export orders can be provided as agreed. For repeat orders, use the approved material and coil specifications as the purchasing reference, and confirm any changes before the next production run.

FAQ – Aluminum for Easy Open Ends

What aluminum alloys are used for easy-open ends?

5052 and 5182 are common alloy options for easy-open-end (EOE) aluminum stock. The appropriate grade depends on the end or tab design, temper, forming requirements and final application.

What is 5052 H19 aluminum used for?

5052 H19 aluminum is used in selected high-strength can-end and easy-open-end applications where the specified balance of strength, corrosion resistance and forming performance is required.

What is aluminum ring pull stock?

Aluminum ring pull stock is strip material supplied for forming pull-tab or ring-pull components. Alloy, temper, thickness and slit width are selected according to the tab design and forming process.

Can Haomei supply narrow aluminum strip for EOE production?

Yes. Haomei can supply master coil or slit aluminum strip according to the required production width and coil specification, subject to the order requirements.

Can EOE aluminum strip be lacquered?

Where the specification requires coated or lacquered stock, coating details should be defined together with the alloy, temper, thickness and end-use conditions.

Is 5052 H19 suitable for every easy-open end?

No. Suitability depends on the end design, forming process, pressure requirements and coating conditions. Some applications use 5052, while others specify 5182 or a different approved material. The end maker’s qualified material specification should be followed.

Is can-end stock the same as aluminum ring pull stock?

No. Can-end stock forms the closure panel, while ring-pull stock forms the opening tab. They may use related aluminum alloys, but their thickness, temper and forming requirements can differ.
