What Is 5052 Aluminum Coil?

5052 aluminum coil is a wrought aluminum alloy in the 5xxx series. Magnesium is the main alloying element, while chromium is added in a controlled amount to support corrosion resistance and material stability. It is commonly identified as AA 5052, EN AW-5052, AlMg2.5, DIN AlMg2.5, JIS 5052 and UNS A95052.

Unlike heat-treatable alloys such as 6061, 5052 does not gain strength through solution heat treatment and artificial aging. Its strength is increased mainly through cold working, also called strain hardening. This is why 5052 is available in tempers such as H32, H34, H36 and H38.

The alloy is valued for a practical balance of corrosion resistance, formability and welding performance. It is especially suitable for fabricated parts exposed to moisture, salt spray, industrial atmospheres or repeated forming operations.

5052 offers moderate strength and strong corrosion resistance, but it is not the highest-strength non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy. For higher-strength marine structures, materials such as 5083 aluminum may be considered, depending on the project specification and fabrication method.

Corrosion Resistance

5052 has very good resistance to humid, marine and many industrial environments. It is widely used for parts exposed to salt spray, freshwater, moisture and outdoor weather conditions.
