Aluminum Coil

What is Aluminum Coil?

Aluminum coil refers to aluminum or aluminum alloy ingots that are cast from molten aluminum through the rolling process, and then processed by hot rolling or cold rolling into coiled aluminum materials. It features uniform thickness, smooth surface, and flexible length cutting, serving as the mother material form for aluminum sheets, strips, and foils.

Aluminum coil is a continuous rolled material made through the rolling process, using aluminum or aluminum alloy as the main material. It is characterized by light weight, corrosion resistance, and recyclability, and is widely used in construction, packaging, automotive, electronics, and other fields.

Regular Plate: thickness between 0.2mm - 6.0mm, the most common type of aluminum coil.

Thin Plate / Aluminum Strip: thickness below 0.2mm, sometimes referred to as strip material.

Aluminum Foil: thickness usually < 0.2mm, even reaching micron levels, used for packaging, capacitors, etc.

By Temper (State):

O Temper (Annealed): soft material, good ductility, easy for deep drawing and bending forming.

H Temper (Work-Hardened): such as H14, H18, H32, with higher strength and hardness but lower plasticity. The numbers represent the degree of processing and hardness level.

Aluminum Coil Production Process

  • Smelting and Casting: Aluminum ingots and other alloying elements (such as magnesium, silicon, manganese, etc.) are melted into alloy liquid in specific proportions, then cast into large rectangular slabs through a casting machine.
  • Homogenization Treatment: The aluminum ingot is heated and kept at temperature to homogenize its internal chemical composition and microstructure, improving subsequent processing performance.
  • Hot Rolling: The heated aluminum ingot is rolled at high temperatures, significantly reducing its thickness and forming thicker coils.
  • Cold Rolling: The hot-rolled coil is further rolled at room temperature to achieve thinner thickness, higher precision, and superior surface quality.
  • Annealing: During or after the cold rolling process, heating and cooling are applied to eliminate work hardening and adjust the material’s temper (such as O-temper, H-temper).
  • Finishing and Slitting: Surface treatments (such as cleaning, coating) are performed, and the coils are slit to the customer’s required width, then rewound and packaged.

Aluminum Coil Purchasing and Storage Precautions

  • Clarify Requirements: Accurately provide alloy, temper, thickness, width, and other core parameters as the first step of procurement.
  • Surface Quality: Check whether the surface of the aluminum coil has scratches, roll marks, oil stains, oxidation spots, or other defects.
  • Dimensional Accuracy: The tolerance of aluminum coil thickness and width should be within the range specified in the agreement.
  • Storage Environment: Should be stored in a dry, ventilated warehouse free from corrosive gases to prevent moisture and oxidation. Vertical storage is recommended, with wooden pads underneath for support.
  • Safe Operation: Aluminum coils are heavy with sharp edges. During lifting, handling, and unwinding/cutting, professional tools must be used, and strict safety procedures must be followed to prevent crushing and cuts.
