5083 O aluminum alloy is a magnesium-aluminum alloy (5000 series) in the fully annealed (soft) condition. It is well known for its excellent corrosion resistance (especially in seawater environments), good formability, high ductility, and relatively high strength among similar alloys. Due to its combination of toughness and weldability, it is widely used in marine applications such as shipbuilding, armor, fuel tanks, and transportation, making it an ideal choice for structural components that require resistance to marine corrosion and heavy forming.
What is a 5083-O material?
“5083-O aluminum alloy” refers to an aluminum-magnesium alloy with the designation 5083 that has been fully annealed (O temper). Its core characteristic is relatively low strength, but very good plasticity (elongation capability) and excellent processing and forming performance.
5083-O aluminum alloy is suitable for marine environments and low-temperature applications. The O temper provides the best plasticity, making it an ideal choice for complex formed parts.

5083 O Aluminum Characteristics

- Choose O temper: If your processing involves complex bending, deep drawing, or large cold deformation, priority should be given to 5083-O material to ensure smooth forming and avoid cracking.
- Choose HXX temper: If the component mainly requires higher static strength and the forming process is simple, then 5083-H116, H321, or other strain-hardened products can be selected.
During processing, it should be noted that this material has average machinability, and prolonged heating within the temperature range of 150–300°F (66–149°C) may increase susceptibility to stress corrosion. Improper heat treatment or long-term use within this temperature range should be avoided.
