What is 5086 H32 Aluminum?

5086 identifies the aluminum alloy, while H32 identifies its temper. 5086 is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy. Its strength is developed primarily through strain hardening rather than solution heat treatment and artificial aging.

In practical terms, 5086-H32 is a medium-strength condition that offers a useful balance between strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and formability. That combination is one reason the alloy is commonly considered for marine and welded structural service.

H32 Temper

The H temper family is used for non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys that gain strength through cold working. In the H32 designation:

  • H indicates a strain-hardened condition.
  • 3 identifies a stabilized condition after strain hardening.
  • 2 indicates a moderate degree of strain hardening relative to the applicable alloy temper series.

Stabilization is intended to reduce the tendency for mechanical properties to change significantly after cold working. The result is a more stable material condition for fabrication and service.

H32 is not a heat-treated strength condition in the same sense as 6061-T6. 5086 is strengthened primarily by cold work and temper control because it is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx-series alloy.

When Is 5086-H32 a Practical Choice?

5086-H32 is worth considering when the application needs more strength than a common 5052 condition while retaining the corrosion resistance and weldability associated with 5xxx-series aluminum.

For projects with more demanding marine-service corrosion requirements, the applicable H116 or H321 specification should be reviewed rather than assuming H32 is automatically interchangeable.

When high strength after machining and a heat-treatable alloy are more important than marine corrosion resistance, 6061-T6 may be a more appropriate starting point.

Why Choose 5086-H32 Aluminum?

Marine Corrosion Resistance

5086 belongs to the Al-Mg 5xxx family and is widely used in marine service because of its strong resistance to corrosion in seawater and salt-laden environments. The actual service performance depends on design, exposure, fabrication, surface condition and the applicable marine specification.

Medium Strength

H32 provides a moderate level of strain hardening. Compared with 5052-H32, 5086-H32 is generally used where additional structural strength is desirable. 5083 may provide higher mechanical strength in comparable product and temper conditions.

Weldability

5086 is a commonly welded non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy. MIG and TIG welding are widely used, although filler metal, joint design, welding procedure and the expected strength of the welded area should be evaluated for the specific application.

Balance of Formability and Strength

H32 sits between soft annealed material and more heavily strain-hardened tempers. That makes it useful for fabricated components where some forming is required but the design also needs a more stable medium-strength condition.

Low-Temperature Toughness

Aluminum-magnesium alloys retain useful toughness at low temperatures and are therefore considered in selected refrigerated and cryogenic-related applications. Specific low-temperature qualification should always be confirmed against the project standard.

Non-Magnetic Material

5086 aluminum is non-ferromagnetic and is suitable for applications where magnetic response must remain low. The exact magnetic behavior of a finished assembly will still depend on all materials used in the system.

5086 H32 aluminum advantages

Which 5086 Temper Should You Choose?

5086-O

Consider when maximum formability and a softer material condition are more important than the higher strength associated with strain-hardened tempers.

5086-H32

A practical medium-strength condition for general structural, transportation and welded fabrication applications where a balance of strength and workability is required.

5086-H116

Commonly considered where marine-service corrosion requirements and the applicable marine material specification are important. It should be selected according to the governing project or classification requirement.

5086-H321

Another stabilized temper encountered in marine and structural applications. The precise material requirement should be matched to the purchasing specification rather than assuming H321 and H32 are interchangeable.

Applications of 5086 H32 Aluminum Plate and Sheet

Marine Structures

Used for selected hull components, decks, bulkheads, ladders, marine structures and other fabricated parts where seawater exposure and weldability are important. Some classification projects may instead require H116, H321 or a specific marine certification.

Offshore Equipment

Suitable for selected offshore structures, supports and components exposed to salt spray or other corrosive marine environments, subject to the required design and material approvals.

Tank Truck and Transport Equipment

Used in selected vehicle and transportation components where low density, corrosion resistance and welded fabrication provide an advantage over conventional steel construction.

Pressure Vessels

5xxx-series aluminum may be used in pressure-related equipment when the specific alloy, temper and code requirements permit. Pressure-vessel applications require strict compliance with the governing design and material standard.

Cryogenic and Refrigerated Equipment

Selected low-temperature structures and equipment can benefit from the toughness of aluminum-magnesium alloys. The actual temperature range and applicable design code should be checked for each project.

Welded Structural Fabrication

Commonly considered for fabricated components where the design benefits from corrosion resistance, low density and relatively straightforward MIG or TIG welding.

For seawater-facing structures, alloy and temper selection should be made together. A project that only needs general corrosion resistance may be able to use H32, while a marine classification project may specify H116 or another approved temper. The difference is not simply a matter of which condition has the higher tensile strength.

FAQ – 5086 H32 Aluminum

Is 5086-H32 a marine-grade aluminum alloy?

5086 is widely used as a marine aluminum alloy because of its corrosion resistance and weldability. For projects with specific marine classification or exfoliation-corrosion requirements, the applicable temper and product specification should be confirmed before ordering.

What is the difference between 5086-H32 and 5086-H116?

Both are strain-hardened 5086 tempers, but H116 is commonly selected where marine-service corrosion performance and the applicable marine material requirements are more stringent. H32 is often used for general structural fabrication when those specific marine requirements are not stipulated.

Is 5086-H32 weldable?

Yes. 5086 is generally regarded as a weldable non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy and is commonly welded by MIG and TIG processes. Filler metal, welding procedure and post-weld properties should be evaluated against the project specification.

Is 5086-H32 stronger than 5052-H32?

5086-H32 generally provides higher strength than 5052-H32 while retaining strong corrosion resistance and weldability. Exact properties depend on thickness, product form and the governing material specification.

What is the difference between 5086-H32 and 6061-T6?

5086-H32 is a non-heat-treatable Al-Mg alloy commonly selected for corrosion resistance and welded marine structures. 6061-T6 is a heat-treatable alloy often chosen for higher base-metal strength and machining applications. The heat-affected zone of welded 6061 does not retain the full T6 base-metal strength.

Can 5086-H32 aluminum plate be cut to size?

Yes. 5086-H32 sheet and plate can be supplied in cut-to-size dimensions subject to equipment, production limits, quantity and the customer's dimensional requirements.

What standard should be specified when buying 5086-H32 plate?

The applicable standard depends on the product form and project. ASTM, EN, customer or marine-specific specifications may impose different chemical, mechanical, dimensional and certification requirements. The purchase order should identify the governing standard rather than relying on the alloy and temper alone.

Is 5086-H32 suitable for automotive applications?

5086 can be considered for selected transportation and vehicle components where corrosion resistance and weldability are important. For high-volume automotive body applications, material selection is normally driven by the OEM's own alloy, forming and joining specifications, so 5086-H32 should not be presented as a universal automotive body-sheet alloy.
